Did The Star-Spangled Banner That Kaepernick Is Protesting Promote Slavery?

Many think "The Star-Spangled Banner" promoted slavery and Kapearnick's protest to the anthem is justified as a result.

In the video below the teacher from Louisiana makes that case.

Her interpretation is most likely wrong.

In fairness, it has also been argued that Key may have intended the phrase as a reference to the British Navy's practice of impressment (kidnapping sailors and forcing them to fight in defense of the crown), or as a semi-metaphorical slap at the British invading force as a whole (which included a large number of mercenaries), though the latter line of thinking suggests an even stronger alternative theory — namely, that the word "hirelings" refers literally to mercenaries and "slaves" refers literally to slaves. It doesn't appear that Francis Scott Key ever specified what he did mean by the phrase, nor does its context point to a single, definitive interpretation.

There was racist in American society in the past as there are today.

There were many whites like blacks who abhorred slavery, even among the founding fathers.

People who try to demonize all the early settlers and Christianity as all evil racist don't understand the complexity of human beings, U.S. history and the influence of the early evangelicals against the slave trade, primarily promoted by the Democratic party.
